In their series A Painting For A Family Dinner, the artist couple Alina and Jeff Bliumis explore cities through dinners, to which they are invited. For this purpose, an advertisement is placed in advance of the exhibition, to which people interested in the project respond. In exchange, the hosts receive a painting made by the Bliumis’. Each dinner is photographically documented: At the end of each meal, a local photographer takes a photo – guests and hosts with the painting in the background.
A Painting For A family Dinner shows an unusual picture of the cities which Alina and Jeff Bliumis have visited. Their work blurs the boundaries between public and private, between the roles of artists and viewers.
Thus far, the project has been realised in Bat Yam, in the Bronx (New York City), Beijing, Lecce, Tokyo and in Dortmund in 2025. The various photographs, impressions of the dinners and recipes of the prepared meals are for the first time compiled in this publication.
The publication is being issued on occasion of the exhibition At the Table. Eating and Drinking in Contemporary Art at Museum Ostwall at the Dortmunder U.
