The grave slabs, grave steles and gravestones of the captains and commanders from Sylt, Föhr, Amrum, Terschelling and Rømø not only reveal the dates of the deceased's lives, they also tell of the adventures these men took on when they went whaling in the Arctic or later to the Caribbean, Asia or North and South America. Annet van der Voort has combined the ships depicted with images of the sea and sky in such a way that they appear to be sailing again. The photographer has also compiled information on the voyages and the families of the captains, creating a multifaceted picture of seafaring from the 16th to the 20th century. The illustrated book is being published as part of the exhibition of the same name at the LWL-Museum Schiffshebewerk Henrichenburg.
