Ever since it was opened in August 2009, we have teamed up with the Emil Schumacher Museum in Hagen to release a series of publications that now spans a total of twelve volumes. Each book is devoted to a central theme in the artist’s oeuvre. Joined together, the series offers a unique overview of Emil Schumacher’s extraordinary painterly universe.
To mark the 100th birthday of Ulla Schumacher (1919–2009), the current volume explores a very special group of works created in 1996: the sequence “Für Ulla” (For Ulla). Ulla Schumacher was more than just the painter’s wife, she also discussed and reviewed his works with him from the very start of his career. In addition to the 25 sheets that make up the sequence dedicated to her, this book presents gouache paintings from the 1990s as well as early drawings from the 1940s for which she posed. With this group of works, showing a rich diversity of motifs and a playful painterly approach, the artist paid tribute to his lifelong companion in a truly exceptional way.
