The twin brothers Gert and Uwe Tobias have been working successfully as an artist duo since the end of the 1990s. Because working as a team brings ideas together and sharing is the basis of their art, the twins discovered the collage for themselves as a cross-media technique. A repertoire of multiple forms and figures is converted into drawings, ceramic sculptures and woodcuts, constantly varied and recombined. Raised in Transylvania, they are still influenced in their style by their German-Romanian roots and the wealth of folk motifs from their native country of origin. In addition to myth-shrouded symbolism in mysterious surroundings, many details with their intense colours of the colourful costumes, fabrics and embroidered cushions are reminiscent of their homeland. Gert and Uwe Tobias are especially well known for their large woodcuts, a genre that is still the focus of their art production. The pictures are created in a potato print-like process in which the contours are sawn out of polar, coated with paint and pressed on paper or, more recently, on canvas.
