The twin brothers Gert & Uwe Tobias have gained a reputation for their large-scale woodcuts. Meanwhile, the artist duo are among the foremost printmakers of international fame. In their shared studio in Cologne, the brothers develop new pieces individually. However, they exchange views, share ideas, styles or inspiration during the production process and every finished piece is signed by both of them. From the very beginning of their career, the twins have been creating small collages that are just as important as their monumental graphic prints. These compositions combine art-historic traditions with elements of folklore, ornaments, items from magazines and books, abstract patterns, and design. A sometimes bizarre visual world arises where the enigmatic and profound meets the playful, and the eerie meets the funny. This book is published to accompany the exhibition at the Sprengel Museum in Hanover and for the first time focuses exclusively on the collages by Gert & Uwe Tobias. Many new works are presented which were produced especially for the exhibition.
