It is hard to define what an art scene actually is. With a sense of irony and plenty of self-confidence, Gregor Guski (*1981 in Olsztyn, Poland) has titled his book “Die Szene” (The Scene), as if there were only one. He is in fact referring to the Düsseldorf art scene, or more precisely, to those artists whose works are currently setting trends and whose personalities have a decisive influence on events in the city. Aside from the big names, graduates of the Düsseldorf Art Academy, and up-and-coming newcomers, Guski presents the Düsseldorf fringe scene in all its variety. His photographs are not documentary, but radically experimental.
In close communication with the artists, Guski’s photo shoots take place in the protagonists’ studios or in environments that shape their art. The photographs become works of art in their own right – flamboyantly decorated theatrical stages in which the sitters are the performers.
“Die Szene” is an attempt to portray the current artists and trends of the Düsseldorf art scene. Almost 100 artists from all artistic genres are presented.
