Halil Altındere (*1971) is one of Turkey’s most renowned contemporary artists. For nearly thirty years, he has been exploring specific political issues in his work, often relating to his Kurdish roots and the multiculturalism within Turkish society. His oeuvre frequently features traditional techniques such as miniature painting and carpet weaving. It engages with a wide array of topics and investigates modes of resistance against power and oppression. Altındere tackles themes such as migration, displacement, subcultures, gender roles, pop culture, and the structure and potency of art and financial systems. Through his artistic practice, he advocates for progressive social change. The artist positions himself in support of marginalized communities, challenges oppression, and fiercely criticizes authority, manifesting a sharp wit, playful irony, and humor.
