Since the mid-seventies, Herbert Egl has created an extensive body of work in paintings and numerous drawings in which organic signs and the structures of color play an important role. Many of the paintings bear titles that refer to organisms or scientific themes. After the dense layers of paint in earlier paintings and a series of overpaintings of photographs in the mid-1980s, the application of paint and the pictorial ground became increasingly transparent in the 1990s. Parallel to painting, Egl works on paper: cyclical series of drawings accompany the painterly work, and since 1991 he has created works on paper in monumental format.
