Mechtild Frisch (born 1943) is known as a sculptor and painter who in the 1970s and 1980s turned to cardboard tubes, packaging and cardboard panels to open up a view into the interior or the "behind". There lurked differently coloured surfaces that could be tackled by breaking them open and drilling holes. From then on, the dissolution of inside and outside, their interpenetration and the resulting play of light and shadow took centre stage.

In the mid-1980s, the artist discovered the intimate format for herself. Based on picture postcards, she created an extensive oeuvre ranging from art history to tourist motifs. What began as a playful experiment was to decisively shape her work over three decades and accompany her work in large format.

The transformation of an everyday object or even a waste product made of cardboard or plastic has now formed the core of Mechtild Frisch's sculptural thinking for over 40 years. The catalogue presents works from all of the artist's creative phases and is published to accompany the exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Villa Zanders in Bergisch Gladbach (04.06. - 08.10.2023).
