  • Modernist architecture in Lithuania
  • An artistic reflection on the changing attitudes to historic buildings

Art Deco, a slide and video installation by the Lithuanian artist Neringa Naujokaite, is a visual record of the process of refurbishing an apartment dating from the period between the two world wars in her hometown of Kaunas. This book provides a detailed introduction to this extensive installation, whose physical existence was limited in time. It also includes images and texts collected by the artist over a period of more than two years and describes the complex process of designing the interior as an authentic reconstruction of the original.

Neringa Naujokaite (b. 1966) is a graduate of Vilnius Academy of Arts and Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. In 2003, she completed the postgraduate course in Audiovisual Media at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne. Her work focuses on social and urban spaces. The Art Deco project investigates contemporary Lithuanian society’s views of its architectural heritage, which is increasingly threatened by neglect and demolition.
