Not many painters have had such a long creative career as Rolf Rose (born 1933 in Halberstadt), who can look back on far more than 60 years of artistic work. This publication focuses on an oeuvre that has been located for years in the environment of Radical Painting and color painting. For a long time, Rolf Rose built up his paintings in polychrome layers, which led to the perception of a striking depth of color. He experimented with painting grounds, pigments, wax and graphite. He is always concerned with color as a material, which he works with a wide variety of tools.
Parallel to his work on canvas, wood or aluminum, he also created countless works with acrylic, graphite or watercolor on paper over the decades; he also produced dozens of sketchbooks. In a concise overview, the continuity of this artist from the 1970s to the colorful expressions of his current late work is shown.
The catalog is published on the occasion of the artist's 90th birthday and to accompany the exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Villa Zanders in Bergisch Gladbach (29.10.2023 - 03.03.2024).
