With her new series of paintings and watercolours, Susanne Ristow disproves the prejudice that art can no longer break taboos. Using her son as a model for this series, entitled "ARE YOU A BOY?", she makes a bold statement about motherhood. For a long time, such a statement threatened the careers of female artists, who were often not taken seriously if they were also mothers. As a result, many women in the art world remained silent about their motherhood, sometimes even denying that they had children, making it a taboo subject.

But Ristow's series is courageous for another reason. She paints her 19-year-old son in poses and attitudes traditionally associated with women. These are based on more or less famous images from art history and pop culture, all of which originally featured female figures, and are now recreated by her son Konrad Béla. In doing so, she challenges his gender identity - particularly significant since he is not queer himself - and exposes both him and herself, as mother and artist, to a particularly intimate and generally taboo area, especially within a mother-child relationship.
