In his work, which includes painting as well as performance, film and photography, Wolfgang Schäfer is searching for a primordial myth. It is the age-old search for the ultimate things that hold the world together at its core. This search leads the artist both into the boundless expanses of the universe and into the microcosm and innermost of things.

Painting is a ritual for Schäfer and the picture is far more than a pure end in itself. Again and again his work is about becoming one with nature, becoming one with himself and finally becoming one with his paintings and performances.

The illustrated book is published on the occasion of the exhibitions in the Stadtmuseum Düsseldorf (04.10-29.10.2013) as well as in the Museum Goch (24.10.-12.11.2023) and provides a comprehensive insight into Schäfer's over 40-year oeuvre.
